The Quiet Sounds of Snow

There is something very peaceful about snow. It quietly floats down from the clouds landing softly on the ground reminding us to slow down and enjoy the quiet and stillness that it brings.

Of course, there is a scientific reason for the quiet sounds of snow. Snowflakes are porous and they trap soundwaves causing them to scatter. Eventually, the snow begins to melt and many times refreezes, so the quiet sounds of snow begin to change and the noise returns. But every new snowfall brings back the quiet and stillness that I love.

We have gotten about a foot of snow so far this year. Between living in Texas and being back in Illinois for 2 1/2 years now, this is probably the most snow we’ve seen on the ground at one time in years. I love the snow. Everything is clean and white (for a little while at least) and life feels more relaxed.

Our snow has been replaced with a blustery rain, and my hopes of a White Christmas have been dashed.

But since it isn’t officially “winter”, I am sure we will have snow again in the future and I look forward to experiencing the quiet of snow once again.
